Ramsgate in KwaZulu-Natal is the kind of place that’s so small people say if you blink while driving through you may miss it.
But today all roads seem to lead to this sleepy seaside town and some, like actor Zolisa Xaluva, have come from as far away as Joburg to witness the union of SuperSport presenter Fezile Makhanya (28) and Miss Earth 2010 Nondyebo Dzingwa (26).
The sun is scorching hot and the smell of freshly slaughtered cow fills the air. A convoy of cars arrives and guests dressed in traditional outfits step out. Women start ululating as abakhwenyana (in-laws) get out.
Umakoti’s family starts singing “abakhozi balele” (the in-laws are sleeping), a popular song sung at most Xhosa weddings. The groom’s family responds with “umakoti ngowethu” (the bride is ours).
The battle to outdo each other in singing continues, but it’s all part of the rich tradition.
The battle of the voices continues until one of the families gives in. In this case it is the bride’s family who throw in the towel as they are defeated by the Makhanyas whose powerful voices and traditional dance moves lure the audience to join in.
